The Ulster Covenant 1912

June 23, 2009  |  Online Resources  |  No Comments
The archive of the Ulster Unionist Council, held by the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI), contains just under half a million original signatures and addresses of the men who, on 28 September 1912, signed the Ulster Covenant, and of the women who signed the parallel Declaration. In total, the Covenant was signed by 237,368 men, and the Declaration by 234,046 women.

Previously the Covenant was difficult and very time-consuming to access and, consequently, it was under-used. PRONI has now improved access by digitising all the signatures, in recognition that the on-line database should make a significant contribution to both genealogical research and cultural tourism.

Palestine Police Badge 1920's-1940's

Today we found a newspaper clipping containing the death notices for

One of the death notices was from her brother Robert Morrow,

his occupation is “Palestine Police”.

I have contacted the Palestine Police Old Comrades Association

Palestine Police. I will also be searching the National Archives online.

S.S. ATHENIA INFO

S.S. Athenia

Two 13000grt replacements for war losses were delivered in 1923/24, becoming Athenia (2) and Letitia (2). These ships were similar to Cunard’s 13000grt A-Class. In 1935, Anchor Line went into voluntary liquidation, and Donaldson acquired their half of Anchor-Donaldson. The passenger route was renamed the Donaldson Atlantic Line. Athenia (2)  was lost during the Second World War, being the first British merchant ship to be sunk by a U-Boat on 1st September 1939.

Unidentified sailor from H.M.S. Impregnable Training Base

Unknown sailor, 12th Sept 1942. HMS Impregnable Training Base

Unknown sailor, 12th Sept 1942. HMS Impregnable Training Base

I have found half a photograph of a young Royal Navy sailor, he is unknown and I would like to try and identify him. The photo was found in a personal collection belonging to either Mary Clarke or Albert Teeney’s family.

He is wearing a cap with what seems to have H.M.S. Impregnable on it. I have looked into other bases and ships but this seems to be the only candidate. This photo has been cut down the middle so the left portion is missing.

On the reverse of the photo in pencil is written:

12 Sept. 1942
Left

Again this may or may not be the fill inscription due to the photo being trimmed.

As far as I can tell H.M.S. Impregnable was a training base for ‘hostile only’ communications ratings at Plymouth / Devonport betweeen 1935-1947. After decommissioning H.M.S. Impregnable was reopened soon after, remaining in commission until 1948.

Any information you may have would be greatly appreciated.

UPDATE

Mum may have just had a memory recall… the chap in the photo could possibly be a Madden from Oregon St. Belfast. A friend of the Teeney family.
