Flagship Watch: Nothing New the Week of May 19
May 19–25 was a quiet week at the frontier — no verified flagship model release and no new benchmark card to score.
I went looking for a flagship and came up empty.
For May 19–25, I checked the usual newsrooms — Anthropic, OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Meta, xAI, Mistral, DeepSeek — for a dated model drop or a new benchmark table. Nothing verified landed inside the window.
That's not me missing a tweet. It's what the primary sources show.
###What didn't ship
No new weights hit an official newsroom with a publishedOn between May 19 and May 25.
The last verifiable flagships are still a year old: Claude 4 (Opus 4 and Sonnet 4) published May 22, 2025, and the Gemini 2.5 updates at I/O on May 20, 2025. Inside May 19–25, 2026 there's no Opus 5, no Gemini 3, no GPT-5 GA, no Grok 4, no Llama 4 follow-on I could pull from a post or model card with a clean date.
I verified via Wayback id_ captures — live fetches for anthropic.com/news and blog.google just return JS shells right now, so the archive is the honest check. CDX for that ISO week shows re-crawls of older slugs, not a new announcement. If something dropped only on X without a newsroom post, it didn't clear my bar. I'm not counting a rumor as a release.
Pricing and context windows didn't move either. Anthropic still lists Opus 4 at $15/$75 and Sonnet 4 at $3/$15 per million tokens. Google still lists Gemini 2.5 Pro at 1M tokens. No quiet doc-page bump in this window.
###Benchmarks: nothing to score
No new model means no new numbers.
I swept SWE-bench Verified, Terminal-bench, MMLU, GPQA Diamond, MMMU, AIME, LiveCodeBench, and LMArena for anything tied to a fresh card dated in this week. Nothing.
For context, the reference SOTAs are still those May 2025 cards:
- Claude 4: 72.5% (Opus 4) and 72.7% (Sonnet 4) on SWE-bench Verified, 43.2% on Terminal-bench — without extended thinking. With extended thinking (up to 64K tokens) plus their internal scorer that samples multiple patches and filters on visible tests, Anthropic reports 79.4% and 80.2%.
- Gemini 2.5 Pro: Google claimed ELO 1415 on WebDev Arena and "leading across all LMArena leaderboards," plus 84.0% on MMMU for the experimental Deep Think mode — trusted-testers-only via the Gemini API at the time.
Neither got updated May 19–25.
###Why the quiet matters
A year ago this same week was loud — Claude 4 and Gemini 2.5 within 48 hours. This year it's silent. That's the story.
It looks like a digestion quarter. Anthropic paired Opus 4 with ASL-3 deployment and security controls. Google held Deep Think back for extra frontier safety evals. When the next model needs a classifier fallback and export paperwork, you don't rush a chart. The weeks after this one (May 26 to late June) show the same pattern — labs choosing distribution and safety over another point on MMLU.
###What I'd do with a gap week
Lock your baseline.
Re-run the tasks you actually route in prod — your tool-use loop, your long-context case, your cost per completed run — and log pass rate, latency, and fallback rate. That's the yardstick the next flagship has to beat. You'll know in an hour whether the price bump is worth paying for.
No new model this week. I'll keep watching the pricing and context-window pages — those sometimes move without a blog post — and call it out when they do.
